08/09 Inspiration from Lily and Cuckoo

The Lily Connection

August 2009

Theme for the month:

The concept is not working for me so I have decided to change it.

Yes, this whole ‘one minute leads to the next,’ and ‘one year follows another’ baloney.  It’s history.  I know, I know, here I go again and I can see you shaking your head (hopefully, your eyebrows went up, too!), but let me tell you how I see it.  Some people I don’t even know told me there are 365 days in the year and when they are used up, I am a new age.  First of all, my Mother taught me not to believe everything I hear, and secondly there is way too much baggage hooked onto this sort of interpretation of time.  Namely, the premise that time only moves forward and that age only adds upon itself.  So, the next time someone asks me my age, my new answer is, “I am a point on the continuum.”  The really fun part in all of this?  The continuum is not a straight line.

The other day my continuum was a figure eight and my point in time exactly crossed another point in my past when I had pig-tails and wore green checker-board polyester pants.  You are probably wondering, “How did you manage to cross another point in time?” and “Where on earth did you get those pants?”  Well, I will tell you.  I was at my sister’s birthday party when her husband shouted over for me to join the game of whiffleball he was rounding up.  I declined at first, based on my automatic reaction to sit on the sidelines.  Practice began and someone smacked the ball backwards, landing somewhere behind home plate.  My brother-in-law shouted, “Hey, we can have a parallel game going on back there, too!”  Wow, this sounds like way too much fun to be missing out on, so I joined in.  I never knew it was possible but it turns out, I can hit the ball and even cover first base.  When I ran around the corner and up the back stairs to tell my Mother all about it, my pig-tails were flying.  Oh, and the pants came from my membership to the Jan Brady fan club.  I miss those pants.  I think I may start a new club…

***Happy Time August***

Behind the theme:
Believe it or not, my idea to change the concept of time came about because I just got my cuckoo back from the United States Patent Office.  Yes, that’s right folks.  I am the official Principal Register for the purple bird who proclaims, “Let the cuckoo out!”  So, this is how my mind works:  The idea of a patent makes me think of science and inventions.  Science makes me think of exploration and believing there is much more to learn beyond the current knowledge base.  Believing there is more to learn makes me think that we can question current thinking and dare to imagine things work another way.  At the same time, all these birthdays were happening around me and for some reason~ I don’t know why~ people keep asking me how OLD I am!!!  I never remember my age anyway, so I have to go back to my birth year and do a whole calculation thing to get my answer.  And then there is the whole turning of the century which complicates the calculation every time and so I decided.  This is not working for me anymore.  Can’t we just toss all the numbers in a hat and pick one out to be on any given day?

On the day of my sister’s party, I was 10 years old.  I did not plan it that way, and wowee, was it fun!  It was even better because the first time around, I was the last oddball to join the team~ this time, I got picked first!  Thanks, Jon!

Lily’s Life Lesson #98

I am so happy
memory fades
with age
because now
I can’t remember
how old
I am.

Behind the lesson:  Actually, I think the more my memory fades, the younger I get!  I call it, “The Fountain of Happiness.”  Maybe all the clutter that has piled up in my head over the years is now flying out the window like papers in front of a fan.  I will add that to my theory.  After all, it is the science of Cuckooology.
