The Lily Connection November 2010

The Lily Connection

November 2010

Theme for the month:

RELAX everything

I distinctly remember sitting on my mat in kindergarten and thinking, “Why on earth am I being asked to lie down and go to sleep?”  This seems like the oddest thing to do at this moment.  I would much rather be over there at the plastic fisher-price sink pretending to do the dishes.  As a matter of fact- and I can check with my Mom on this one- I think I may have gotten a time-out for refusing to go to sleep!  Either that or I think my teacher, Mrs. Evans, took my graham crackers away from me that day.  Well, some traits stick with you all of your life, and I still spin through each day with no moment to waste, checking things off my to-do list.  For those Bugs Bunny fans out there, picture the Tasmanian devil in a skirt and ponytail.

Perspective changes with time and for the first time, I see the benefit of the napping mat.  Not that I actually use it very often (although I can see that somewhere down the road!), even a moment of pause can be refreshing and necessary.  Maybe we could call them “mental naps.”  Anyway, one of my favorite ways to pause is a commune with nature.  Around here, we are just entering the phase of Fall when the leaves change all sorts of crimson colors.  Yesterday, I had my first “AHH” moment with a stretch of four or five trees together in all shades of red, yellow and orange.  In that moment, all that filled my mind was appreciation for the beauty I was beholding.  In that moment, I felt washed over with peace.

Now that brings me to the essence of my story.  You see, with all these busy thoughts that fill our busy days, sometimes it can be hard to nap even when it’s time to sleep!  Now I know how important it is to have a restful sleep.  I mean, after all, tomorrow is a new day filled with so much to do!  So I came up with a nifty way to pause the thoughts and ideas still racing through my mind as my head hits the pillow.  With distinctive clarity I say in my mind, “Relax.  Everything.”  Not just relax my mind, or relax my shoulders, or relax my toes.  Relax everything.  And just as if the sleep fairy sprinkled sleep dust all over the place, my mind drifts off to sleep.  Mrs. Evans would be so proud.

*** Happy Napping This November ***

Lily’s Life Lesson #104

The cycle Of life

Is truly

In play

Nap time

Once again

Becomes such an

important part

Of our day.

Behind the theme:

A few months ago, my sister sent me a card- she sends the most amazing cards- and on the envelope holding one of these cards was a sticker that read “Nothing is more important than this day.”  I love this phrase so much! It pops into my head so often, at any given moment on any given day.  To me, it means “Life- the world- my mind- may be in a current state of chaos but at this very moment, with this very breath, I choose to be at peace.”  Well, I never thought of it before, but you could also say, “Nothing is more important than this sleep.”  Because, it’s true!  When it is time to sleep, nothing is more important.  Sweet, sweet sleep…

The Happy Place:

I call the Lily web-site the “happy place” because when you get there, you are.

The Secret Place to say a little bit more:

I think, think, think all the time all the way up to sleep-time!  As a matter of fact, this whole Lily Connection came to me last night right before I was drifting off to sleep…  And another big idea I have to name this thing I feel when everything is “Lily.”  It feels like I am breathing in a light and it seems so funny to try to describe!  It is like the opposite of a stagnant river.  Because anything that stays stagnant is a mucky mess.  And if you let thoughts sit still too long or emotions sit still too long, it is mucky.  So, this feeling we have that flows in new life and energy every day is like a flowing river that travels in a circle through each of us and out into the universe and back again- never ending and flowing.  And I want to come up with a new name for just that!!!  So that keeps me thinking… but any time I need to, I say….

RELAX.  Everything…

When thinking resumes,

To be continued…

See you next month!
